Coffee beans on green
Brief

Take Harbour from café cups to supermarket shelves by spring. Same anchor, same cream, a louder bag.

Questions for Mara

Do the café cups change too? Who signs off the copy on the back of the bag?

Brand voice
Cups

Same cream cup, with the anchor a touch smaller so it clears the sleeve.

Packaging direction

Kraft bags with one spot colour per roast. The harbour drawing goes on every size, not just the 1kg.

Ashford Press quote
Kraft bag mockup

One loud colour and type as big as the bag will take. This is the shelf presence we want for Harbour.

Keep the anchor, lose the navy. We sit next to the big brands now, so the bags have to read from across an aisle. And the harbour on every size, please.

Rebrand plan

Harbour Coffee has roasted on Spike Island since 2014. Mara wants the bags on supermarket shelves by spring without losing what the regulars already know them by.

What we are keeping
The anchor mark, redrawn with a heavier line so it holds at 16 px
Cream as the ground colour on bags, cups and boards
Hand-lettered prices on the café menu
Packaging direction

Kraft bags with one spot colour per roast. The harbour drawing goes on every size, not just the 1kg.

Ashford Press quote
Next two weeks

Packaging first, then the café menu. Final artwork goes to the printer on the 18th for the October run. Ashford Press need the bag dielines by the 4th to hold that slot, so the 250g bag is finished first and the other two sizes follow from it. The shelf shoot is booked for the 11th, with all three roasts on oak in window light. Mara signs off the colours on the 14th, once she has seen the bags on a real shelf, and the café boards are repainted the week after, when the slab is final.

Roasts
Harbour House, the house blend, in harbour red
Low Tide, the decaf, in sea green
Spike, the espresso, in bistre brown
Shelf test

Mock up all three bags at full size and stand them on a real shelf next to the big brands. If the anchor does not read from six metres away, it gets bigger before anything goes to print.

Timeline
Bag dielines to Ashford Press by the 4th
Shelf photo shoot on the 11th
Final artwork to the printer on the 18th
New bags in the café from the first week of November
Open questions

Do the café cups change in the same run, or wait for the next order? Who writes the copy on the back of the bag, and should it tell the Spike Island story?

Mara would also like a version of the wordmark for the van and the market stall, which can wait until the bags are signed off.

What I am changing

Shorter sessions, wider spacing, and no more re-reading the same page the night before. The deck gets rebuilt around the gaps rather than the totals.

I will check it again in four weeks and keep only what actually stuck.

Questions

It's a spatial workspace. Instead of filing things into folders, you put your notes, files, images and links onto an infinite canvas and arrange them in a way that matches how you think conceptually. The layout is the organisation - similar ideas sit near each other, and connections represent relationships. It preserves causal relationships between ideas this way, so your brain can focus on what it does best: generating new ones.

Causal is the step before opening any creative tool. It's for creatives who see the benefit in planning before execution. Notion organises structure into pages and databases; Obsidian is plain markdown files. Causal's canvas stores rich text, files and images without restraining you to the structure of a page, so you have complete freedom in planning.

Yes, and it isn't a trial - the free plan doesn't expire and you don't need a card to start. You get 100 notes, images and links, 10 files, 5 widgets, 50 AI requests a month, and every feature the canvas has: nothing is locked behind Pro. Pro raises those limits for when you outgrow them.

Yes. Any canvas can be turned into a read-only link in one click, and whoever you send it to can open it without an account. Sharing grants access to that canvas and any nested canvases within it. You can copy the link again or stop sharing at any point.

Three tools provide structure. Create a collection to pack nodes into tidy columns. Create a nested canvas inside a canvas when a topic needs its own space. And when you have something you don't want to place yet, drag it to the right edge and park it in the unsorted tray.

You can drop in anything up to 20 MB per file. PDFs, Word documents, Adobe files, markdown, spreadsheets, images and video all open fullscreen inside the app with real previews. Markdown files and CSVs can even be edited in place, saving straight back to the file. Anything else is stored safely and shows up as a card you can download whenever you need it.

Both. Notes sit directly on the canvas for fast, flexible thoughts, while longer pieces open into a dedicated full-page editor. Quick notes and full-page text files share the exact same rich formatting - headings, lists, checkboxes, quotes, code blocks, highlights, images and links.

Yes - there's a free Mac app, and it keeps itself up to date, so you only ever install it once. Open this page on a Mac and the download sits in the footer, under Product. There's no phone app: Causal needs a desktop-sized screen to be worth using, so that one is on the longer horizon.

No. Empty canvases come with a set of templates for different kinds of creative work, whatever your workflow - we have templates for app development, website design, branding, storyboarding, research and more.
