The problem with the page

We are being forced to think in straight lines.
Every modern workflow incorporates either Word, Docs, Notion, or some form of a digital page where text runs strictly from top to bottom. For late-stage execution related work, this is fine and necessary, as linear structure acts as a healthy constraint.
But for early-stage thinking, a page is a problem. Ideas are chaotic. Creative minds are defined by half-formed relationships that you cannot fully put into words, let alone paragraphs on a page. When you force your nascent idea onto a linear structure, you are essentially flattening it, as you end up skipping the cognitive process which pushes an idea to its fullest form. When your digital tools starve your ideas of the space they deserve, you are losing ideas you could never have imagined in the first place.
Most people are fine with this. But for creative individuals whose entire personality is based on obsessive ideation, that unseen loss is invaluable.
From Neurons to Ideation
Neurologically, we use the same neural pathways to navigate infant ideas as we use to walk through physical space. Working through an idea is the equivalent of placing things around a room.
The problem is that the human brain has limitations. You can only hold a handful of connected ideas at one time. Every loose idea you try to hold onto is silently taxing your cognitive ability. Freeing up that space allows your brain to do what it does best, which is to run simulations and generate new ideas. Offloading that context onto a page deletes the spatial awareness that each idea has with other ideas. However, putting that context onto, say, a whiteboard allows you to retain that spatial relation, making it an efficient way to liberate cognitive bandwidth.
This isn’t a new revelation. It is why we teach complex mathematics on chalkboards. It is why architects scatter blueprints across tables. Picture Steve Jobs and you picture him standing in front of a whiteboard. The ideas that shift paradigms come from the cross-pollination of separate disciplines. Those intersections simply cannot exist inside a 600-pixel-wide document column.
Execution vs Exploration
When an entrepreneur gets a new idea, it’s never in a vacuum. For example, take the execution of adding a referral programme to a software business. This impacts their pricing, sign-up screen, and marketing campaign; trying to map that out on a page strips the idea of its interconnected complexity.
For a designer working on a brand identity, coherency is mandatory. The brand’s typography, motion, and colour can only be coherent if the tools used to plan each area do not impose linear structure, because the relationships between each are not linear.
Even a writer whose final output is literally a page does not think linearly. A narrative is conceived in fragments, and it’s the writer’s job to piece the ideas together in a way that builds interest for the reader. Getting started straight away on a page forces them to commit to a chronological order that the mind doesn’t naturally work in.
A page is the final container used to ship an infinite idea.
The Canvas
A canvas gives your ideas room to breathe. It allows an entrepreneur to understand every part of their business, a writer to expand narrative fragments before putting them together, and a designer to create a coherent brand identity. Spatial layout restores the context that the traditional page destroys.
This is why we are investing in Causal. The frontier: Spatial agents
Getting a Large Language Model to output a linear document was solved years ago. The industry spent trillions optimising models to generate text top-to-bottom. Yet we still don’t have agents that plan a workflow around the natural way of human thinking.
Teaching AI to reason spatially - to understand proximity, grouping, visual hierarchy, and structural context - is an almost entirely open research problem. That is precisely why it is worth solving. The future of human-AI collaboration shouldn’t be a chatbot sidebar spitting out blocks of text inside a side panel. It should be an intelligent collaborator operating inside a shared, spatial workspace that mirrors how the human mind naturally processes complex problems.
